A Rose By Any Other Name

Awards and recognition events go a long way towards enhancing an employee's Career Well-being.

This story about Rose Hospital’s Service Awards is especially memorable because it was the first time the message we were entrusted with went beyond awards and recognition. It was custom written to have a direct impact on the career well-being of the people in the audience.

The Story

A concerned woman’s voice on the other end of the phone expressed trepidation over an upcoming event. For quite some time Rave Reviews had been producing Rose Hospital’s awards and recognition presentations, which were always a time of great celebration.

The Rave Reviews' team had established a strong relationship with Rose and knew their culture and their people very well.

However, this year a major company shift loomed ahead. Rose Hospital had its own firmly established character. Their identity was personal, warm, and caring – a mom’s chicken soup kind of atmosphere. They were about to be purchased by a major corporation. How would they adapt to new rules and regulations? Would they lose their jobs? How could they maintain their familiar culture as a cog in a large corporate wheel? And how do you celebrate years of service with an upbeat attitude while a cloud of uncertainty hangs overhead?

The staff at Rose Hospital, and the creative team at Rave Reviews, knew that it would be the wrong approach to ignore the circumstances and pretend like everything was going to be, well, rosy. Rave Reviews provided a forum for the planning team to voice what was on each of their minds. By communicating with each other, they were able to identify the common concerns, shared by everyone in the company, and talk about how to productively address them.

The Rave Reviews team decided to honestly represent what everyone was feeling by creating a character named Rose. Through story, she would vicariously walk their people through some of the apprehension they were experiencing.

Rose, the character, was in the hospital on the brink of death. The spirit of Rose went from place to place, visiting various areas in the hospital. In each department she discovered that while things would definitely be different, the spirit of Rose, the heart and soul of Rose, would remain the same. The tone was not at all flashy or showy, but sincere and respectful.

The award recipients were honored and recognized, just as they had been in the years before. And just as importantly, the audience left with a new perspective – trepidation was replaced by a realistic feeling of hope. Honest communication resulted in improved morale and a stronger sense of career well-being. Years later, Rose Hospital still thrives under their parent company.
